Overview

Golmokgil is a hidden gem tucked away in an alley of Melbourne’s city center, offering an authentic taste of South Korean street food and late-night dining culture. Located on Waratah Place, this vibrant Korean restaurant captures the essence of Seoul’s pocha scene—informal eateries known for their lively atmosphere and comfort dishes that pair perfectly with soju cocktails.

The restaurant shines with its diversity of bold flavors and textures, from the spicy stir-fried pork to soulful stews like soft tofu and kimchi soup. Its menu is robust, featuring well-executed classics alongside more adventurous options like the viral mala hotpot. While the hotpot’s beef can be on the chewier side, the rich, slightly sweet broth rooted in Korean culinary tradition leaves a lasting impression.

Not to be missed are the seafood and chive pancake and the snowing cheese fried chicken, standout dishes praised for their perfect balance of crispiness and flavor. The sweet and creamy honey butter garlic fries offer a nostalgic twist reminiscent of beloved Korean comfort eats, providing a delightful contrast to the spicier dishes.

The atmosphere at Golmokgil is one of its strongest draws. With ample space that welcomes groups as well as solo diners, it is an ideal spot for late-night gatherings, casual celebrations, or simply unwinding after a long day. The décor and vibe transport you to Korea’s bustling street food alleys, making it a place that feels both familiar and unique to Koreans and food lovers alike.

Service here matches the quality of the food—friendly and quick, ensuring each guest’s experience feels special. The mix of traditional and modern Korean fare appeals broadly, catching the attention of those seeking a true taste of Korean nightlife without leaving Melbourne’s central business district.

In sum, Golmokgil offers a satisfying, flavorful journey through Korean cuisine in a setting that is fun, authentic, and welcoming. For anyone keen on authentic Korean flavors and a lively, late-night dining experience, this is the place to go.

True Melbourne alleyway gem for South Korean Pocha food. This is probably the definition of the late night dinner spot to party and eat, which opens till 2am at night! Known for their viral MALA hotpot which is numbing yet sweet and savoury, they also have other popular South Korean street foods and comfort foods at an insane quality. Their soju-infused cocktails are the perfect pair. Volcano Mala Hot Pot $32 3.5/5 Snowing Cheese Fried Chicken/Spicy (half/half) $35 4.25/5 Seafood & chive Pancake $28 4.75/5 soy marinated crab 3.25/5 honey butter garlic chips 4.3/5 Texture of the fried chicken and seafood pancake was the highlight of the night. Great flavours, great textures. One thing I’d mention is the beef in the mala hot pot was a bit tough but once you get into that bite, it is super rich, yet slightly sweet from that Korean twist. Honey butter garlic fries were a creamy version of loaded fries and I’m all for it bc it tastes like the garlic cream cheese loaf flavour that Koreans love. If you want vibes as close to the Pocha in Seoul & Busan, Golmokgil is the spot. It’s those hidden alleyway spots that will make your late night dining experience fun and unforgettable. Brings me back to my post-feeds after uni events!

Pretty standard, fairly delish, on par with other Korean restaurants! We’re not on the pricier side though especially with a weekend surcharge

Amazing experience from the time I walked in to the food. Ambience is very cute korean vibes. The best cheese and corn I’ve had in Melbourne. Very fast service. Would definitely come back!

Been here twice now, would recommend, lots of space for larger groups and a good atmosphere. Not a fan of the volcano hotpot, the meat is very chewy, the soup base itself is nice. The fried chicken and kimchi pancake were delicious, I would definitely go back again to have these multiple times, a big highlight.

Dropped by for a quick bite before heading to a show so we were the first patrons to enter but then it started to fill up pretty quickly so I guess this place has a following. We enjoyed a simple early dinner of Korean fried chicken, chips and Korean cold noodles. Both the chicken and noodles were so well executed it made the simple dishes stand out and exceeded our expectations. The chicken was both crispy and juicy. We had it with the spicy chilli sauce which had a great balance of flavours and heat. It was as if they knew me and my preferences. The cold noodles were chewy and slippery, the perfect texture and the noodle soup was so tasty and refreshing i could have had seconds if I had two stomachs ... Not sold on the pieces of cold pork belly had came with the meal as it didn't add much in my experience. But the noodles and soup more than make up for this.

Cozy restaurant with korean pocha vibes! Came here for late dinner and tried their fried chicken, pork belly, japchae, seafood/kimchi pancake and chicken feet. Their fried chicken was the best dish where it was so crunchy yet tender, and the flavour of snow cheese was present in every bite! However, we found the pork belly and japchae dish soo OILY and there wasn’t a lot of seafood in the pancake either. Service was standard but the restaurant was clean and tidy. There was an incident where the waitress took one of our dishes with no explanation and came back with another a few minutes later which we did find odd. There’s also a cute photo booth at the entrance for customers to use which we enjoyed too.
